Ceiling Leaking During Heavy Rain? Emergency Steps for Rawalpindi & Islamabad Homes

Monsoon season is when we get the most emergency ceiling calls in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, and what you do in the first hour of a leak often determines whether it's a same-day fix or a much bigger repair. Here's the order of operations we'd walk you through on the phone.

First: protect people and belongings, not the ceiling

1. Move furniture and electronics out from under the leak. Water damage to belongings usually costs more to replace than the ceiling repair itself.
2. Place a bucket or container under the drip, and if the leak is spreading rather than a single drip point, lay towels or a tarp across the wider area.

Second: check for an electrical risk before doing anything else

This is the step people skip, and it's the important one.

• If water is dripping near or through a light fixture, fan point, or switch, turn off the breaker for that circuit at the distribution board before doing anything further in the room. If you're not sure which breaker controls it, turn off the main switch until it's safe to check.
• Don't touch any switch, socket, or fixture in the affected area with wet hands, and don't use a ceiling fan or light in the room until an electrician has confirmed it's safe.
• If you smell burning or see sparking anywhere near the leak, leave the room and call immediately — this is no longer just a ceiling issue.

Third: try to identify the source, if it's safe to

A leak during heavy rain is usually one of three things:

• A roof leak — most likely if the leak worsens directly during rain and stops shortly after it clears.
• A blocked or overflowing gutter or drain sending water back under roofing rather than off it.
• A leaking AC drain line or plumbing pipe running above the ceiling — possible even when it's not raining, but often mistaken for a roof leak if it coincides with a storm.

You don't need to diagnose this precisely yourself — just note when the leak started and stopped relative to the rain, since that's genuinely useful information for whoever inspects it.

If the leak is minor and away from any electrical fixture, yes — just keep the area under the leak clear. If it's near lighting or a fan, or the ceiling shows any sagging, we'd recommend keeping the room closed off until it's checked.
