Burning Smell from a Switchboard? What to Do Immediately

Of everything covered in our wiring guides, this is the one situation where we'd tell you to stop reading, act first, and come back to the details afterward. A burning or hot-plastic smell near a switch, socket, or distribution board is a fire risk, not a minor inconvenience — treat it that way from the first moment you notice it.

Do this first, in order

1. Turn off the main switch at the distribution board if you can safely reach it without passing close to the smell's source. If the smell is coming from the distribution board itself, don't approach it — leave it off from a distance if you can, or leave the area instead.
2. Don't touch the switch, socket, or panel — not to investigate, not to turn it off manually. Isolate power at the breaker or main switch, not at the fitting itself.
3. Leave the room and ventilate if you can do so safely — open windows and doors on your way out rather than staying to investigate the smell further.
4. If you see smoke, sparking, or any sign of fire — not just smell — evacuate and call the fire service immediately. This isn't an electrician callout at that point.
5. Once power is isolated and there's no visible fire risk, call an electrician the same day. A burning smell that's gone away after the power is cut is not a sign it's resolved — it's a sign something failed and needs to be found before that circuit is used again.

What usually causes it

• A loose or corroded connection at a switch, socket, or inside the distribution board, arcing and heating the surrounding plastic. This is one of the most common causes and can develop gradually before becoming noticeable.
• An overloaded circuit or socket — a plug or socket carrying more current than it's rated for heats up, and the smell is often the plastic housing itself starting to degrade.
• A failing breaker or old fuse that's not disconnecting a fault the way it should, allowing heat to build up.
• Water or moisture damage to a switch or socket that's now causing internal arcing.

None of these are safe to leave and monitor — all of them get worse, not better, if the circuit keeps being used.

Why we don't recommend any DIY step beyond isolating power

Every version of "just check the socket" or "tighten the switch plate yourself" carries real risk here — arcing connections and overheated wiring inside a wall or panel aren't something to diagnose by opening a cover plate. The one thing worth doing yourself is cutting power to the area; everything past that is an inspection job.

2. Identify the specific point of failure — a connection, socket, breaker, or section of cable — rather than just replacing the visibly damaged fitting and re-energizing.
3. Check the surrounding wiring and connections for related heat damage, since a single overheated point is sometimes a symptom of a wider issue on that circuit.
4. Replace and properly re-terminate any damaged wiring or fittings before restoring power.

Is it ever safe to just ignore a faint burning smell that goes away?

No — treat any burning or hot-plastic smell from an electrical fitting as needing an inspection, even if it seems to resolve on its own. The underlying connection issue doesn't fix itself.

Can I smell-test which socket it's coming from myself?

You can note which room or area it seems strongest in from a safe distance, which is genuinely useful information for whoever inspects it — but don't get close to or touch fittings to try to pinpoint it exactly.
