Half the House Lost Power But Not All of It? Here's Why

Losing power to part of a house while the rest stays on is confusing precisely because it doesn't match how people expect electricity to fail — most assume it's all-or-nothing. In a properly wired home it isn't, and that's actually useful: which rooms lost power and which didn't is often enough to narrow down the cause before anyone even opens the distribution board.

Check this first

  1. Go to the distribution board and look for a tripped breaker — one switch sitting in a different position (or a middle position) from the rest. This is the cause in most cases we're called out for.
  2. If a breaker is tripped, reset it once. If it stays on, the trip was likely a one-off overload. If it trips again immediately, leave it off and treat it as a fault rather than resetting it repeatedly — see our guide on a breaker that keeps tripping for what to do next.
  3. If no breaker looks tripped but power is still out to part of the house, don't keep flipping switches — this points to a different kind of fault, covered below.

Why it's usually only part of the house

Homes are wired in multiple circuits on purpose — lighting, general sockets, and kitchen appliances are typically split onto separate circuits specifically so that a fault or overload in one doesn't take down the whole house. So losing power to, say, one floor, one wing, or all the sockets but not the lights, is consistent with how the system is meant to behave when something goes wrong on a single circuit.

If no breaker is tripped, it's usually one of these

  • A loose or failed connection at the distribution board or somewhere along that circuit — common in older wiring, especially if it's happened before in the same area.
  • A fault at a specific socket or switch on that circuit, sometimes from water ingress or wear, which can cut power to everything downstream of it on the same run.
  • A problem with the main incoming supply or meter if entire sections spanning multiple circuits are out — worth checking whether neighbors have also lost power, which would point outside the house rather than inside it.
  • An RCD (residual current device) that's tripped without visibly looking tripped on some panel types — worth checking specifically for this if your board has one, since it protects a wider group of circuits than a single MCB.

What not to do

  • Don't keep resetting the same breaker repeatedly if it won't hold — this doesn't fix anything and can make an underlying fault worse.
  • Don't assume it's safe to use extension cords from a working room to power something in the affected area — if there's an actual fault, this doesn't address it and adds its own risk.
  • Don't open the distribution board cover to inspect internal connections yourself.

What we check on-site

  1. Which circuits are affected, mapped against what's actually on the board — this alone often narrows the cause significantly.
  2. Connections at the distribution board for looseness, heat damage, or corrosion.
  3. The affected circuit's wiring for a fault, using proper testing equipment rather than guesswork.
  4. Whether the pattern suggests an isolated fault or a sign that a wider rewiring or panel upgrade is overdue — especially relevant in older homes.

Is it dangerous to leave part of the house without power overnight?

Not inherently, as long as you're not bypassing the issue with something risky like an unsafe extension cord setup. It's an inconvenience more than a hazard on its own — but worth getting looked at rather than left indefinitely.

Could this be the power company's fault, not my wiring?

Possibly, especially if neighbors are also affected or it coincides with a known outage. If it's isolated to your property and follows your home's circuit pattern, it's almost always internal.
