We've inspected enough of these properties to recognize the same handful of faults showing up again and again, often in combination rather than isolation.
The faults we see most often
- Degraded rubber or cloth-insulated cable. Common in Askari Rawalpindi houses from the 1980s and 90s, this older insulation cracks and becomes brittle over time in a way modern PVC cable doesn't, gradually exposing bare conductor inside the wall.
- Undersized circuits for modern load. Wiring planned for a handful of lights and a fan per room simply wasn't sized for today's mix of air conditioners, water heaters, and kitchen appliances running simultaneously.
- Fuse boxes instead of MCB/RCD boards. A meaningful share of older Askari homes still run on rewireable fuse wire, which protects far less reliably than a modern breaker board and is usually one of the first things worth upgrading.
- Ad-hoc additions over the years. Extra sockets and circuits spliced into the existing system without matching capacity upgrades, often by different electricians at different times with no single plan behind the work.
- Missing or ineffective earthing. Many older properties either have no proper earthing or a single rod installed years after the original wiring that's never been tested for resistance.
- Surface-run or partially exposed wiring, added on later rather than concealed properly, which is both a cosmetic issue and a physical damage risk over time.
Why these faults compound each other
None of these issues exist in isolation in a typical older Askari Rawalpindi home — they build on each other. - Missing earthing — a new earthing system installed and tested, bonded to every circuit.
When a fault means targeted repair vs. a full rewire
A single fault — say, an old distribution board on otherwise sound wiring — can often be fixed on its own. But when we find several of these issues together, especially degraded insulation throughout the house, a full rewire tends to be the more sensible option rather than repeated targeted repairs that only address one symptom at a time. What we look for during an Askari Rawalpindi inspection
Because these faults tend to cluster together in older properties, we walk through the same sequence on every inspection: checking the distribution board type and condition first, then tracing which circuits serve which rooms, testing earthing, and examining accessible wiring for signs of cracked insulation or heat damage. We also ask about the home's history — when it was last touched by an electrician, whether any rooms were added or extended, and whether appliances like AC units were added after the original wiring was installed. The clearest sign is the age and history of the house — if it's original wiring from the 1980s or earlier and hasn't been rewired since, it's likely. An inspection can confirm this by examining accessible sections of cable.
Can I just replace the distribution board and leave the rest of the wiring?
